My truck has a low tone, vibration in the front end when slowing down, not necessarily when braking. I notice it happens mostly when your going at highway speeds (55-70+) and I have to let off to slow down. It's not a vibration you can feel, just sounds like your going over a set of rumble strips. I'm thinking front hubs or axle bearings inside the housing. Anyone have an idea?
Are your tires worn evenly or are they cupped at all?
An easy thing to try is to swap the tires front to back and see if the noise follows them.
Also try putting the transmission into neutral when it happens and see if it changes. If it does you could have a bad U-joint in the rear driveshaft. Sometimes the noise and vibration will fool you.
Usually a front wheel bearing noise will change if you turn the steering wheel back and forth slightly.
I put new tires all the way around, and that took some of the vibration out. I still have a slight vibration cruising at highway speeds, but when accelarating or braking, it has a hard vibrates. I crawled under the truck to check the U-joints, I couldn't get the driveshaft to move at all, so I jacked it up and had my brother turn the tires while I listened and watched and didn't notice anything except that the output shaft/ driveshaft yoke has about a 1/32 (or 1/64) play (up & down, side to side). Is this normal? I am going to replace the u-joints within the next week, so hopefully this will cure my problem.
my shaft has the same kind of slop at the transmission and i have a low-grade constant vibration also. any ideas on the play at the output shaft. is it normal or has the nose cone on the shaft worn?
Changed the U-joints, Finally!!! The rear one on the rear shaft was completely gone, no needles or grease what so ever. Just rusty red dust inside. Haven't test driven yet because I'm still in the process of customizing the exhaust into true duals.
