Chattering 2000 F150

HI
I have a 2000 F150 4x4 and when I come to a complete stop and turn either left or right the whole truck shakes like I am driving over washboard roads. I can't tell if it coming from the front or rear end. There are certain speeds that I go while turning that makes it worse or better or can't feel it at all, but that is when I go REALLY slow in the turn. What do you think it is? Ball joints? Brakes? (which were just replaced about 5K miles ago.) There are currently 72K miles on it.
Thanks

Sounds like limited slip rear end chatter. Unless you want to spend a good amount of money replacing the plates, here's what to try. Drain and refill the rear end fluid, add 4oz. of ford friction modifier c8az-19b546-a make shure they give you the blue and smells like sh## stuff. Take the truck and drive it in a figure 8 about 15 to 20 times. that should work.

Exclamation another question

Is it common for the limited slip to go out?

We have had some troubles with the limited slips and they actually don't go out, they just get (sticky) is how i'll put it. It is normal to have a little chatter on a sharp turn however. But it's not normal to go out, nor should it be real prevalent.

Question

HI

thanks for your response
I had the rear differential fluid replaced and had my rear brakes checked and everything looks fine according to my mechanic. But it is still doing the same thing.. but not as bad... maybe it's the tires? they are nearly new Goodyear Wrangler AT/S. they have about 5K miles on them... maybe I got a bad set?

Mine scoots a tire when turning and accelerating. This is just the sign of a good tight LS unit. It shouldn't chatter though. It may ease up the more you drive it with the new fluid in it.

Wink

Hi again,

It does not do it when the truck has been sitting overnight. I cannot feel anything when I turn the truck either right or left after starting it and going ..it only starts as it gets hot from driving. I think it might be the tires. Nothing that my mechanic has done to the truck has helped get rid of it. (new rear diff fluid, checked the brakes, front end is perfectly fine) I am just worried that this is a major problem and it is going to cost a lot of money to fix.

Doe's it do it when you come to a stop and then take off? If it doe's,the slip yoke may be binding up on the output shaft of the trans. You may want to try to remove the driveshaft and lube the slip yoke with a teflon grease. The part # ford tells me to use is d2az-19590-a. Hope this helps.

Hello again

Yes, It only does it when I come to a complete stop and then take off to turn. I am bringing it in again tonight to the shop....let's hope this is the cure all...

Question

HI,
my mechanic took the drive shaft completely off the truck last night, checked for grease on the slip yoke, plenty there and put it back together. it seemed to help. whatever was catching has seemed to go away and I barely notice the grinding when I turn... any ideas why this would be so? My mechanic also told me that the clutch packs in the rear diff might be bad and it could cost me up to $1200 to fix. does that make sense to any of you?

Replacing the clutch packs shouldn't cost that much, I do it here for around 500.00 - 600.00. But it might still be the cause of your problem. I suggest try driving in a few more figure 8's, see what happens.

Did you put the synthetic lube in there? I used Valvoline full syn with friction modifier already in it. It used to chatter like mad (2000 f150 4x4) and still did for a while after the fluid change. It has eased away since then and doesn't do it anymore. Guess the new grease had to soak in.

Yeah, he put something in the rear diff.... I think it was called Trak Lube or something like that. also when I brought it back the day after they took the rear diff plate off the level was not full so he had to put more 90W in it..
