That sounds like a good plan to me. Get a D3 or D4 block that has thicker cylinder walls. You can tell this by brining a couple LONG allen wrenches with you. Pop out the freeze plug on the side and measure in between the bores with the allen wrench. You will need to measure at the top and bottom as well as the middle. The top will usually accept a bigger wrench than the bottom. This is normal, not a sign of core shift. Here are the measurements:
Sean...what kind of HP and torque do you think..say a .060 over like yours but with the longer stroke and the roller cam? I think you guys have talked me into it? LOL..
I dont know why it didnt dawn on me before? I guess I just had 428 stuck in my head!
You will usually start to loose HP when you get into the big stokes liek that. You will have a more streetable engine with more potential for HP though.
Ok Sean..Say for instance I can sell my roller cam.. I know I can..and wont lose any money? LOL! and I went with the cam your running what would the differance be?
Know remember Im not running a high stall just the stock converter..
Russ, I don't see any reason to push the bore too far. You're going to need custom pistons anayway, so no reason to stretch for standard 428 bore etc. Just bore the block as needed to clean up. You're going to get plenty of cubes with the long stroke.
I think you'll like the 349521 if you go that way. It seems to almost be designed for our trucks or other heavy cars. There's a good torque response at low RPMs. healty idle and vacuum to power all your accessories. Now, if you plan to ditch the accessories and just make a dragster, then step up to a bigger cam.
BTW, do you know what part number Comp springs you have?
Russ, the 521 cam is just a tad hotter than what I am running. You would loose power. I don't really recommend my cam to someone with edel heads. I should have bought a single pattern or a dual pattern without so much split. The edel heads have no problems on the exhaust side and don't need the crutch. The 801 is a great cam for a mild daily driver that will still get somewhat decent mileage for a performance oriented brick of a truck like we own. It has a very flat torque curve. I do not care about mileage so my next cam will be bigger and have a tighter lobe center.
OK Guys..Sean..Greg... I guess I should keep the 521 then..Sean says its a little bigger than what he's running..and I'll have 1 or 2 cubes more..
I am wondering tho with say even 4.080 bore and that long of stroke if it going to take a while to spool up? I thought that at .060 over that it might help?
Custom made pistons? Any thoughts and price..I know you guys used Ross...but man..they dont give those away...LOL..
And Greg I got you download....Did you have the 446 Idle set high..was that your cam breakin period? Thanks for the Help...we'll get this thing making some power come hell or high water..any guess's on HP? Oh yeah ...that long of stroke..what about rods?
