you need new EGR (exhaust gas return) valves, or a part of the emissions system. No it wont Hurt the engine, but its not going to pass emissions and will lower your gas mileage. Unless you have the time, patience and space I wouldnt do it personally(any one here have??? ). I have two codes coming up for that too (the light will go away and come back everyone in a while, if you have the same exact codes i do). Im waiting to pay someone to do it

I have a '97 with 5.0 engine and got the EGR code. I simply removed it and cleaned it out with carb cleaner, code is gone. AutoZone was VERY helpful (along with people on this site)!
Good luck!

Get it diagnosed correctly. A lot of times people get an EGR code, replace the EGR valve, then find out the EGR valve was fine, that fault was either the EGR sensor itself, or crud in the vacuum lines to the EGR sensor. I like Fr8hauler's idea of removing the EGR system, cleaning it out, reinstalling it, clearing the code, then driving it to see if the code returns. That sounds like a good first step.

Well I brought it to our ford dealer this morning and they hooked it up to the computer, it said the EGR valve flow insufficent. So the service man set me down and told me that the would first take a vacume, then check the sensor, then the valve,( in the order of most likelyness with my miles 45000) Also that the would not charge me until they find my prob. and see if the Warranty would pay for it. In my mind that was a pretty good. wouldn't you say. Oh but one thing they could not work on it today they said alll of the reak mechancs don come in on the weekend only the ones for oil, tires, Ect. So wish me luck and that you all for you're help!!!!!

Well today I took my Explorer to the Dealership and had them fix what was wrong. Turns out it was the sensor not the actual valve itself. The sesor cost 89.00 and the labor was 66.00 so it came out around 175.00. But thankfully I have the extended waranty so it only caust me 50.00, well I am happy, My car is happy, and so is my pocket book. Oh and why i was there they ficed a recall on it something about a seat bracket they out some spacers. Does anybody know wehat that is about????

Thanks For all of the help !!!!!!!!!!!

Good to know Jernla. Anyone know the level of difficulty as to repl. the sensor or the valve itself?

Replacing the valve consists of 2 bolts and a thread connection. The bolts are easy to remove but the thread connection to the EGR valve can stick due to the high temps and debris that it is exposed to. It took me about 30 minutes to get the thing loose. Heating it up somtimes helps and a really long cheater bar wouldn't hurt. Search the forum for threads on changing it out. There is some good stuff out there.

I had the EGR code last year. Turned out to be the DPFE sensor, like what you said.
