oil pan removal ?

ok, i have done everything that needs to be done for the oil pump re-placement, but the motor is still not high enough, i still have 2" that i can jack it up. my problem is my oil pan is loose and the pump and tube are in the pan, where can i jack the motor up at? i dont want to do it on the harmonic balancer and screw it up. im at a standstill. only 2" to go. if i put a block on the bellhousing it doesnt lift the motor up just the tranny. anyone ever experience this before? thanks for any input

I tend to use an engine hoist. But as long as you are careful and put a block of wood between the jack and harmonic balancer, I have seen it done that way without damage.

alright, here is an update. put a jack under the bellhousing w/ a 4x4 and jacked it up and saw the pan slide about an inch. this let me get the screen, tube and pump out of the pan(lots of room now)felt inside the pan and i felt no gunk or debris, actually pretty clean.so im thinking of trying to put the new pump and tube/strainer in without removing the pan. anyone know how much of a pain it is to get the shaft from the pump to the dist.. ill probably need a flashlight. anyway have the tech article on the gasket from a search and it already had a one piece rubber gasket on it, so no major cleaning on the lip.job took about 3 hours yesterday, but got aggrevated and tired and was just fighting the pan. today was a little better. now i need to read about priming the pump. thanks for your help.anyone have any suggestions on cleaning the screen. i have lit a few on fire out of older vehicles with a little gas, but dont know about this type of screen and tube

I just replaced the oil pan on my 90 f150 .I jacked under the oil pan with a big block of wood between the jack and the pan so you dont damage the pan(in my case the new pan)I went almost 3" then put wood blocks in between the engine mounts and the frame.then removed the jack.
Of course you would have to bolt your oil pan back up to do this.just a few bolts so the pan is secure. As for installing the shaft I did mine with one of those little mirrors. It is a pain in the butt but it can be done. With the screen out of the pan I used some brake cleaner and sprayed it out with an air compressor to clean. To prime it pour some of your new motor oil into the inlet screen end and then rotate the shaft until oil spirts out the outlet. It is now primed .I would definetly still read everything about it .Just in case I've left anything out.One more thing I have a three inch body lift on my truck so I my clearences for jacking the motor up are greater. You will have to pay close attention to everything when jacking.Hope this helps

You may try putting a little heavy grease on the end of the oil pump shaft and placing it into the distributor shaft to hold it in place while you are installing the oil pump. I usually prime the oil pump with STP as it coats the gears better and won't run out until the pan is filled with oil.

finished at 8:00 tonight. only thing left is bolt up the exhaust, fill with oil and bump it off. when i did a search someone had wrote that they took the coil wire off and turned the truck over to prime the system. do i really need to do that? the lifters are still coated, pistons arent dry,is this just good for the motor in general? the shaft stayed in the dist. pretty good then felt for the hole on the pump and slid it in. i primed the pump with dexron 3, i used that on my crown vic oil pump, and my mustang, and have not had any problems. ill posts results tomorrow, i.e leaks, motor blowing up, etc, etc. appreciate the input everyone. thanks

finished bolting everything up. did everything by the book, started it up and no oil pressure on mech. gauge. and now have loud tapping sound on the top end. guess ill take it back apart and start all over again. only 1 quart low on oil but that shouldnt affect my oil pressure i wouldnt think.

I always put 3/4 quart oil in the new oil filter everytime I change the the oil to help the oil pump during the initial startup.

i did do that because i had the filter off initially, so went ahead and just dumped it in 1/2 full. im not going to sweat it,i believe i did not get the rod in the hole correctly even though when i put it in and it wouldnt turn i thought i was in, is there another hole in that area that i could have put the shaft in?. will probably tear into it again on monday, take the day off, take my time-again,and make sure the oil pump isnt faulty. anyway have the 83 rx-7 with a new turbo so im not too depressed over this setback
