i have a 429 in my garage that i want to sell. i ran #'s on it and it seemed like it maybe was a cj, but i wasnt 100% sure. some guys came over and told me it wasnt and that it was at the most worth a 150 bucks. the block casting numbers are DOVE-A. the heads are DOVE-C. rods are DOOE...something and the crank has a 4U on it. the crank is completely stock along with the bore. the pistons have 429 stamped on them and have C8 something but they dont have the football head shaped rod bolts in them. could somebody tell me what i have and what its worth. basically its a rebuildable long block.
Its a good block but unless its a 4 bolt main its not a CJ block. The SCJ and CJ block are D10Z. I'll be honest I don't know which rods you have, maybe truck rods. Well based on you later statement you just have standard rods. Its the broached rod bolts that give it away. Your block is nothing special. In many cases the later blocks are better. This is do to the lower deck height. You deck height is probably 10.300. It makes it much harder to build any type of combo because many combo are based on the 10.322 deck. I think you short block is worth $150-$250. Oh by the way the Z in the number I gave you means any letter.
You heads are the good piece here. They are not CJ/SCJ heads, those are D00Z. But DOVE are very good heads. My guess is they are worth $150-$250 as they are for the pair. An assembled set with 3 angle seats cut for 2.19" / 1.76" valves, spring pockets cut for dual springs, 1/2 " guide liners installed, S/S valves and springs sell for about $1300.
That my take on it and these prices reflect where I live.
I have to disagree with Terry about your block. That is one of the best blocks Ford made and is very sought after for high horsepower motors. It has thicker main webs than other blocks and is the easiest one to put after market 4 bolt caps on. Some of the D0VE-A blocks were used in CJ's and came with 4 bolt mains. I have saw some on e-bay go for $300 bare. If I was selling your motor I would probably say it was worth about $300-$350.
Hi - I've enjoyed my '68 T-Bird 429 which I transplanted into my '78 F-150 for about 13 years now, but (ignorant me) I had no idea there were so many fine points about different engine parts until I started poking around in this website. Where, exactly, would I look for those casting numbers on my block and heads? (Engine is in the truck - access is a bit of a challenge.) Want to see if I've got one of the great ones, or just a good one!
