My wife and I bought a new '04 today and I'd like to put a class 3 hitch receiver on it. I want the 2" receiver for accessories I already have, not for the weight capacity. I will need to wire a harness for my utility trailer lights. Will this be difficult? Is there a plug somewhere already?
Hey TimV... its doogster... take a look at the post I just made about my Class III hitch for my 2004 Escape... maybe we can help each other... right now, I don't know what to do....
my buddy hooked up a trailer to his '04 escape with a 4-pin wire harness, the running lights work but the blinkers and tail lights don't. Is there a relay switch somewhere or one needed? Any help is appreciated, Thanks.

My understanding is that a different electronic flasher is required for a trailer hookup on the Escape. The standard, non-trailering version won't work.
yup......I did this and I still need to go buy a bigger flasher. But appearantly that's the problem. There are two OEM flashers for the Escape. One listed for a tow package and one without.
Did you have to cut into existing wires or is there a plug somewhere?
Just plugs right in if you got the factory hitch kit. Pull up the rear interior panel and you'll find it. But then you have to go and get a bigger flasher. Only the running lights will work otherwise.

"Factory hitch kit" - do you mean towing package? In other words, if I don't have the tow package, will I have the connector behind the rear panel to plug into or will I have to do some splicing. Any info is appreciated.

Even if you don't have the tow package (didn't get it when you bought the truck) The wiring will still be there. I got a factory hitch from Ford and put it on my Escape. Meaning I didn't get one with the truck but ordered the part from Ford and put it on myself. It's really pretty easy. You just take the back bumper cover off and then remove the back bumper underneath. The hitch will replace the back bumper. Then look for the outline of the trailer hitch tab on the bumper cover. Cut it out carefully so the receiver can exit the bumper cover like it's supposed to. You will find a nice route for the wires when you start working in the area. Take off the rear interior wall on the left side and find the empty plug. Plug in the wire that comes with the hitch(no splicing necessary, the plug and wiring for the hitch is there regardless of whether or not a hitch came on the truck from the factory) Then go get yourself a bigger flasher like I talked about. Everything should work then. No splicing is necessary, you'll still have the plug behind the panel
