Air Box Mod

I have noticed a lot of users that have taken off the funnel and the front part of the air box off their air intake. What is the purpose of this and does it make that much of a difference in performance?

I think it is usually because of an aftermarket intake that this is done. It's done to get more air to the filter and more air means lower egt's and more power.
