My truck is back on the road! Only took a week. After I lost my fuel pump ecentric I have been fighting rain and lack of parts to put it all back together. Not to mention that I removed my oil pan with the motor installed. Tip; When removing the oil pan, remove the motor. You'll save time and pain doing it that way.
While I had the oil pan off I checked the oil pump. It was badly scored and I decided to replace it. When the truck is cold I have pretty good oil pressure (mid guage). As it gets warm the pressure drops and finally, at idle, it is at the L end of the guage. I understand the the pressure will drop some when it gets warm, but that much? When the RPMs come up while driving the pressure moves up to a little less than 1/4 guage. Shouldn't I be registering more pressure?
Thanks for your reply. Wish you hadn't said anything about the pump to block gasket. It scares me. I had total hell with the oil pan. There is so little room to work and I had to jack my motor up so high that I think I dented my firewall. The oil pressure sensor is a mushroom that is attached to a tube coming from the block. The wire runs from the mushroom to the guage. Since posting the question I thought maybe the tube is clogged a little with gunk. I mean, the inside of the oil pan was not the best. So Maybe I'll start there. I don't know about doing the oil pan again.
Oil pressure was better today and remained just slightly below mid-guage. I didn't do anything. Just drove to work and back plus a little driving around during the day. 63 miles today and pressure looks good. I primed the pump by filling the cavity after I installed it before I put the pick up tube on. Maybe it wasn't primed enough last night (first start after fixing) or maybe it was just trying to get the oil throughout the motor.
Don't know, don't care. I'm happy about it. No leaks yet either. I hope that lasts. I've had a leak at the rear seal forever.
