General Front Ends

Well, the steering was getting a bit loosy goosy down the road so checking out the truck i found that the outer tie rod ends needing changing (92 f250xlt 4x4 7.3l) i put it off for a while and finnaly decided to get the job done. So down I go, spend some more cash and picked up both outers. While jacking up the front end i noticed that my drivers' upper balljoint was a bit loose. I checked the tie rod ends when the truck was still on the ground so I didn't notice the balljoint needed it too, so I decided to change the tie rod ends anyways and read up on the re&re of the balljoint.
Well, i've done a few on 2wd's but never on a 4x4. It looks as I have to remove the front axel to get at the balljoint.
Any tricks of the trade? what do I have to take off and what can I leave together?
everything so far tells me that i have to remove the brake asmbly (spindle, caliper) split the ujoint and remove the axel. is this right?
how long should i expect to be at this? and what else should i do while its in this shape?
Im gonna go and get an alignment right after and hopefully that'll tighten up the steering.
is there any other adjustments that i can do to the steering to help it out a bit?
everything else with the steering components seem to be tight.
Thanx
Dubra

I think you it have right except for splitting the "u" joint, it doesn't come apart unless it is being replaced.
remove wheel
remove brake caliper and hang aside, do not let it hang from the hose
remove hub
remove spindle
withdraw axle assy,
remove steering knuckle
replace upper and lower ball joint
reassemble
it is somewhat easier to describe that it is to do.

Yes, I have done many ball joint replacements but I'm not going to go into detail at this time, do a search, this has been discussed at length.
I would be open to specific questions.
