I have been a member here for a while. I just traded my 02 F-250 V-10 for a 04 F-250 6.0L. From what I have been reading I have a 04 truck and a 03 engine. Truck build 09/03, engine 25 Sept 03. So far I have had no problems. I do have one question. I have read that idleing a diesel is bad. In the morning I warm my truck up by idleing around 1200 rpms for about 10 minutes. I have to get it warm before I move because I only have 5 miles to get to work. If I understand correctly this procedure will not harm my motor. Is this correct? When you guys talk about idle are you talking about the 700-750 rpm. I assume since diesel generators run 24/7 at higher rpm that I will be ok. Thanks in advance. I am sure I will have many more questions.
I run mine in the morning at about 750 for about 10 mins at the most. I let the temp gauge hit the lowest mark. According to my latest oil analysis the practice hasn't hurt anything.
Mike, I usually run mine for 3 to 4 minutes in the morning when not really cold. I did the same thing! I got rid of my '03 V-10 last October and got a 6.0 PSD and have been really happy with it! They tow a whole lot better than the V-10 and much better mileage........
Letting it idle and warming the oil is a GOOD thing.
These motors need to warm up since a diesel uses glow plugs to initiate the process and internal heat to maintain. With diesel fuel's lower "heat point", it takes a while for everyhting to warm up.
As well, you have 16 quarts of oil to loosen or warm up.
The only damage (or some feel) is extended idle at one-speed RPM (like overnight or for hours at a time. Some recommend an idle boost to keep injectors from fouling and generating enough engine heat.

Since you said you let it idle at 1200 r.p.m., I take it you have an idle controller on your truck. 1200 r.p.m. is a good spot to warm up your truck. THE reason you dont want it to idle at 750 or 800 for a long period of time is due to the fact that, that will cause "Wet Stacking".
Wet stacking is when the motor is dumping fuel in the cylinders but the motor is not warm enough to burn that fuel so you have extra fuel in the cylinders that is not being burned.
That fuel will clear away all the oil on your cylinder walls and cause damage (i.e cylinder wall scoring).
I have analyzed my oil during the first 10000 miles which is the breakin period. I also changed my oil about 3500 miles. Just because I wanted a good record of the engines breakin and wear. It looks good so I won't get it analyzed nearly as much. Probably at 25000. I will let the oil go to about 5000 or more.
