I was wondering whats the biggest engine for a 66 Ford Mustang fastback can have besides the stock 303 and the 428. Im working on a pony car and restoring it to the original condition but cant decide what engine i would need to go with it i need a beast a pal of mine that i went to mechanic school at wyotech with restored a classic Dodge Charger w/a Hemi and i need the biggest engine ford every made if i lose to my buddy i gaurantee Henry Ford will be tossing in hes grave knowing a pony car lost to a hemi ANY SUGGESTION WOULD BE APPRECIATED?
Biggest mass production engine ford makes is the 514, which can be bored and storked even bigger. On top of that add a blower and nitrous there's no way he'll keep up with you.
You say you are "restoring a '66 Mustang to original condition" I assume by that you mean the largest engine that will fit without cutting up the front shock towers. The largest engine the original 64 1/2-'66 Mustangs came with was the 289 and the big block FE (428) will not fit without major surgery. The '67-'70 Mustangs all had an FE big block factory option so there is enough room in those model years. The 1971-'73 Mustangs (the largest Mustangs ever) were designed to accept the 429/460 without modification and these have the biggest engine bay with plenty of room.
The largest engine that looks like a 289 when the hood is opened and requires no vehicle alterations would be a 347ci stroker small block. You can get around 400hp from a 347 without nitrous.
The 351W bored & stroked to a max of 427cid could also fit. FRPP makes a 351W stroker 392cid crate engine with 430HP.
You do not need as much horsepower as your friends Charger because the '66 Mustang weighs about 600 pounds less. What you will need is traction.
Thanks guys now me and madscientist are still workin on are pony car at the moment and hopefully keep you posted. and towboat if you got the skills and a sick mind like me you can make any mustang bigger and better ....
If I was me, I'd visit the FE forum about building up a 427, 428, or 390. A good port job, good cam, big valves and a nice big nitrous kit and you'd soundly blow the doors off the hemi. Might not even need the nitrous.
FE's won't fit without major work. I would take a 351 and bore it and stroke it to a 408. Put some AFR 205 or 225 heads on it. A decent cam with that combo will net you around 525 naturally aspirated hp. If you need more than that go with some nitrous. I woudl go with a forged or billet crank and some good rods and forged pistons. That way you don't have to worry about the bottom end. Just keep pouring in fuel and NOS until you have enough power to beat him. BTW, 525 hp in a little light Mustang should be good for at least mid 11's.
you can take a 460 safely punch it out .110 to a 521 and shoe horn it in, I've seen it done once in a '66, but prey you never have to change plugs in it unless you can get one of the 29.95 specials with no strings attached deals
My Friend gots that hemi stroked to a 650 with mighty blower pushing over 900 Detroit Muscle if you guys saw it you wouldve done what i did and figure what the hell em i gonna do" but i got the experience and brains to try to make my mustang push around 800 hp pretty tough thing to do but im gonna try but i was really hoping some other member had the same problem but nothing in this post never mention racing a hemi but i dont race him till next week...
I have a question, how much time do you have to do this in? I have a brother who built a 429 that required a rearend out of a 2ton truck and costum driveshaft to hold up to it. He did it cheap too, most of the parts were junk yard parts. If you have a couple days I can get the info for you, we are a family of hipo ford freaks
lol hipo ford freaks, uh about a week and four days depends on the weather and if the tracks looking good its about a good 2 mile track to race but hopefully i can get it done someone said above that ford had a 514 but cant seem to find that engine unless he was talking about a engine that was stroked out to 514 but if i cant get this done i probably have to use my and my dad project car a Shelby Cobra it has a respectable 650 horses but i need something a little bit bigger..cant use a lighting remember vintage muscle car racing. My friend prolly get **** but MOPAR SUCKS
