I just found a 1976 front axle for my 1968 highboy! It came with all the steering gear except pitman arm! My question is this: What type of power steering box did 1976 highboys use? It probably doesn't matter but I need
a box that will fit the pitman arm that will fit the draglink on the 76 axle!
There are no F-250 4x4s for me to take a look at so info is appreciated!!!
Perhaps all these pitman arms interchange so I could use say a 1978 box.
.................Jimmy , the pS setup on a 76 hiboy had a VERY unreliable PS system madeup of a mechanical steering box hooked to a control valve which actuated a Bidirectional slave cylinder to move the wheels left or right. Most owners of 73-77 hiboys will do a PS conversion and completely discard the old system. You will need to find a 77.5 (Mid year conversion by Ford) thru , 78 and 79 Power Steering box for a f250, 4x4, which is a very Heavy duty box. then you have to find a 14" connecting link to connect the Pitman arm to the Leftside wheel. ....OR.... There is a KIT that a Guy sells on Ebay for 800 or so that has ALL the Parts to make the conversion. It is VERY well thought out and there IS NO Welding involved from I've been told. He has put this kit together because there are so many hiboy owners that wanted to convert their truck over to a conventional PS system. If, you plan on keeping and improving your truck this kit is worth every penny. I'm sure there are folks on here WHO have installed this kit if they would Take the time to explain how they made the conversion. , s.kuteman
Thanks so much for the info!!!! So the 76 250 4x4s still used "power assist" steering. I have read some articles about the 78/79 power steering box conversions and this is the route I'll have to take. I want to add some extra lift to my 68 highboy so I'll have to get a custom link made up between the pitman arm and wheel. I'll also check the kit from E Bay. Thanks again!!!!!
