Can someone tell me in layman's terms what hp does and torque? I know there must be trade offs between the two chips. Does the lower hp give better fuel economy or the torque? Which is more important for towing?
Superchip:
80 HP / 120 FT LBS (Towing)
120 HP / 180 FT LBS (Economy, light towing)
150 HP / 225 FT LBS (Performance, light towing)
Diablo:
45HP / 115 ft-lbs torque tow file for heavy towing
65 HP / 150 ft-lbs torque, all-around use, light towing, fuel economy performance tune
100 HP / 220 ft-lbs torque, no towing unless you have an EGT gauge and exhaust system installed
I am looking for a chip primarily for occasional towing but primarily fuel economy driving under normal conditions.
Torque is the twisting force that the engine produces. HP is a measure of how fast torque is delivered. HP can be figured by this equation: HP=Torque x RPM/5252. you need torque to get something moving, the more torque you have, the easier it will be. HP is basically an engines ability to maintain it's torque at higher RPM's. That is how a Honda S2000 gets 240 HP out of a 2.0 liter. It has to spin it at around 7000 RPM's, it makes it a fast car, but put that motor into a Pickup and it won't get out of it's own way.
As far as the fuel economy and which chip is better, I have no idea. Have you asked around in the Superduty and 6.0 Forums.
There's a bigger picture to look at than just the raw hp/torque numbers, especially with the diesels. Those numbers are peak gains. You need to look at where the power is gained, and also the features available. I don't think either product will disappoint you. Things are in flux right now with Superchips just introducing their tuner. Diablo Sport isn't sitting still and is about to introduce an update that will surprise some people (current owners can download the updates from Diablo's site when they become available).
