differential fluid change

I am changing my front and rear differential fluids, and was curious of some advice. I have a 92 f350 4x4, and posi-trac. The truck has 145K miles. Any suggestions on what fluids to use and additional suggestions that are helpful when changing these? Thanks, Kyle Corley

When I did mine I put Mobil 1 75w90 in the rear and Valvoline 80w90 in the front. I had to suck the oil out of the front since there was no drain plug or plate to remove. I had 130k on it then and 150k on it now with no problems. I figured for the small amount of synthetic, I would use it in the rear, and since the front doesn't get much wear, it was better to use cheaper oil. You would need to get the friction modifier additive for limited slip differentials.

kyleC9959 has a F-350 4x4 so that means he has a Dana 60 front axle so he will have a diff. cover to be able to remove unlike your F150 with the third member front-end cmlind.

Just unbolt the diff. cover and have a oil pan under the diff., let all the oil come out. Make sure you get a new gasket for the diff. cover before you do this. Clean the diff. cover real good with a putty knife or something of that sort, bolt it back on and fill her back up. Remember to use a limited slip/posi additive if you have either device. If the diff's are open there is no need for an additive since there are no clutches.

Have fun!

Well, I changed my fluids. Before I did this, my truck was kind of grinding from 2nd to 3rd, and almost 3rd to 4th. When I was draining the fluid in the rear it was like a gray colored sludge, adn in the front about a quart of water came out before about a quart of gray sludge. I just bought the truck last week. But since I changed the diff fluids, the truck runs 10 times better.

Just wanted to add to this thread. Mobil 1 diff oil has friction modiflier added, so there is no need to add aditional FM.

Later,
