My m5od won't go into first gear. In other gears it has about six inches of slack either way. I know my pins are worn out, what else could it be? What other trannies will bolt into the setup I am using right now? Please, please help me
I had a problem where it would not go into any gear, and the shifter moved freely throughout the box with no "H" pattern whatsoever. When it was rebuilt, I was told the shift forks were misaligned and that had contributed to the problem, this may be be related to your problem of it not going into gear, your syncros may be very worn as well with all that play. I know that it might take some work and money, but the upgrade to the ZF-5speed transmission will be well worth the money, I spent 1500 for a rebuild and it still grinds and I feel it will always be the only weak point in the truck.
There are two plastic-type washers (for lack of a better term) along with two or four spring steel washer that keep the shifter ball tight against the trans top cover and shifter cover. When my trans shifter was sloppy, I took off the shifter cover and found the the plastic parts had desintegrated but the steel washer were still in palce. Replaced the worn and missing parts and it tightened the shifter right up. HTH

Hey thanks alot. I am almost positive that is my problem. I did pull out 2 or 3 steel rings that look like they could be some sort of springs, and they was no plastic washers in there at all. I new had to be something like that. Do you know where I can pick up the parts? My local store said that I would have to buy a whole top end from a dealer. Thanks
Your neighborhood Ford Dealership Parts Dept should have them, or at least be able to get them for you. Just purchase two sets because the parts under the pins are identical to the parts that are above the pins (the ones that are serviceable according to Ford). I got my replacement parts as a kit from another web site; came with the two plastic pieces, four steel rings, and two steel pins. The pins are pressed into the top plate and at least one of them needs to be pushed out enough to install the bottom parts.
I don't have the web site name right now but could find it if you need to order the kit. The pins may need some coaxing to get them out far enough or may just slip out of the way. I had to rig a special tool to get mine to budge.

Might as well go through the 'cheaper' options before busting out the wallet for the rebuilt.
What is the deal with car companies using plastic parts for vehicles? Or tin/plastic in their radiators? Crappy drain plug design - they couldn't have found a way to make that so that it DIDN'T dry out and then mark it spot everywhere you go.
FoMoCo, Chebby, Dodge-it - its stupid. They wonder why the Japanese have stolen market share galore - its because they still build cars to an extent, American companies are just trying to sell the damn things. I think that American products are finally being 'built' for quality as well as sales...but we're still a ways off the BMW, VW, Toyota, etc of the world. That's enough ranting....I'll behave.
I just hope that they don't trickle their cheapness into the Aston Martin line at any time or place....
