Red face Rims, backspacing, offset...

Alright folks,

I'm fixin to buy some new rims and tires for my rig. I have a 6" lift, and I'm planning on running 16x10 rims with PJ Dirt Grips that are 36x14.5R-16. The rims I'm lookin at are Weld Scorpio's:

16x10 8x170 Backspace - 3.625 Center bore - 4.93

Will that backspace work with those tires without fryin my suspension components? Also, what does "offset"?

Thanks,
Terry

Offset is how far off center the mounting surface is. Backspacing is how far the mounting surface of the rim is to the lip. A 10 inch wide rim with 3.625 backspacing is going to be offset 1.375.

IMO...Would probably be allright for your suspension but I wouldn't do that to my bearings.......That tire with such little backspace will stick way out if that's what you looking for.

I'm not necessarily lookin for it to stick out. The look is cool, but I don't wanna be replacing wheel bearings every 5000 miles either. I drive this truck 45 miles each way to and from work, and put about 200 miles on it every weekend, so I need longevity. What would the recommended backspacing be for this? I heard 4.5 or 4.25 a while back, but I can't remember if that's right, and I don't know how the width of the tire will impact that.

I shopped for tires and wheels for a long time....I didn't want mine to stick out past the fender because I don't like that look, some do though. I went with a 4.5 inch lift, 315/75 (35X12.1) on a 16X8 rim with 4.25 backspace. They sit flush with the outside of the fender. That same tire and backspace on the same wheel in a 10 inch will stick out about 1 inch. They're on trucks at a dealer near me. Given my preferences for looks if I had a 6 inch lift I would stick with a 37X12.50R17 on a 17X8 with at least 4.25 BS, take the 4.5 if you can find it in a wheel you like(good luck there). That fills the wheel well but does not stick out and looks great IMO. I really don't think a 10 inch wheel with at least 4.25 BS will stress your bearings much but I would be wary of Weld's 3.625 BS. Someone will come along and say they run 12 inch wheels with no problems.....but not for me....hope this helps

I agree. I went with 17x8 and 37x12.5's and I believe they were 4.5 inches of backspacing. They don't stick out past the fenders and they should keep the load centered between the bearings.

Are there any issues with airing down on a rim that's 17"? That's the whole reasone I wanted to go with a smaller rim of 16" or so. I don't know if it makes that much difference, and I really don't do much serious wheeling, but going to Hatteras and driving around on the beach I really need to air the tires down cause that diesel is HEAVY! The 17's do sound like they would look nice though. Thanks for the help guys...
