First the front passenger door lock went out, then now the back drivers side door is hanging up. It locks intermittantly. Whats wierd is that after trying to hit the lock button a few times causes all of the locks to not work. I took the passenger door panel off and made sure everthing was lubricated well and not binding up. I plan on replacing the locks, but just wondered if there was something else going on?
This is a common problem with the Ford trucks. The lock actuators are poor quality. They're not too terribly difficult to change, and if memory serves me, they can be had for around $60 over the Internet.
$53? I got screwed. Maybe they've gotten cheaper...
I don't know what goes wrong with them. On my 2001, the original ones were a sealed unit and I didn't bother taking one apart. I do know a "flaky" one will be hard (or not very smooth) to move, and a bad one may be seized up altogether. The replacements I've gotten from Ford were slightly different, and cheap looking. Who knows if they'll last longer.
I've seen solenoids seize up from time to time (not neccessarily automotive), but I've never taken the time to see what went wrong. Now you've got me curious. It's like having that song in your head that you just can't get rid of. Thanks a lot!
