Anything Special to Push Start

I have a manual transmission F150 4.6L. I am thinking I have a bad starter (see other post). I was thinking about push starting the truck to take it into a parts store to check out the starter. Is there anything that I need to be aware of other than the standard approach:

1. put in 1st gear
2. push in clutch while pushing truck
3. pop clutch

It has been a million years since I have push started anything, so if I am forgetting something crucial, someone please clue me in.

Thanks.

I've done that just for fun on my 2003 F250 5.4L 6-speed. It works best in 2nd gear though. I let the truck roll down hill in neutral, turn the key to "RUN", then I push in the clutch and put the truck in 2nd. Then, I release the clutch slooowly, it starts right up. Let the clutch out too fast and the truck just stops like you just hit the brakes. I have to get to at least 8mph for it to work.

Thanks, n578md. You have an interesting idea of fun, btw.

Also, you might want to reply to this or another post to change your post count. You do not want it to sit on that number for to long.

The bumb start, one of the many benefits to having a standard. Other benefits include: wife and most freinds can't borrow truck, most car theives can't drive stick either.

I hope you're right about thieves! The rest doesn't work for me. All my friends used to have or have a manual F150/250 or 350. And the wife... "can" drive s stick. (Is merging on the highway in 2nd gear and 5000 rpm really "driving a stick" though?)

Definately do it ins 2nd gear. Much easier on the transmission! An of course make sure the key is in the run position.
