Engine hesitation

Question Engine hesitation

I have a ’97 Explorer sport with 4.0 OHV. The engine has been hesitating during slow accelerations at higher speeds (45-70). In the past two years I’ve changed the plugs and wires, fuel filter, and PCV valve. I had the dealer run a full diagnos on it 2 months ago and they said the K&N filter I installed was clogging up the MAF. That couldn’t be it because the engine was hesitating before I installed the K&N and I’ve tested the MAF and I get good voltage readings. It really likes to hesitate when I give full throttle going up a hill. Any suggestions?

If it was mine i'd hook up a vacuum gauge & check for a clogged cat & check fuel pressure.

MAF can be cleaned. If they think the MAF is dirty, I'd try cleaning it and see if that helps.

I sprayed some electrical connection cleaner on the MAF element 2 weeks ago and it did not seem to work. Is there a better way of cleaning the MAF?

A faulty or dirty MAF will show up as a lack of power above 2000 rpm. I agree with cleaning it first. If that dosen't help, do a voltage check on the TPS. A search of the forum will get you the procedure. Basically you're looking for a smooth voltage transition on the signal wire when the throttle is advanced.

I would think that electrical cleaner would do a good job on the MAF. Again, do a search, and you'll find several different suggestions on cleaning it.
