Tow hitch for 2002 Explorer

After searching previous threads here's my questions.

I have 2002 Explorer XLT V8 with 17" wheels..part of some appearance package with sunroof etc. Anyway, it came with a class ll hitch and I'd like to occasionally tow class lll configured equipment. Nothing as heavy as a large boat or camper.

A friend has the same hitch on his XLS and went to the dealer for a class lll hitch. They installed it under the bumper....so he has two hitches. IMO, it looks half assed.

So, is there an aftermarket class ll hitch that replaces the class ll? Will my '99 Explorer unit work? (made by Hidden Hitch...I suspect not) Should I just get a 2" to 1 1/4" adapter?

Any advice appreciated.

If what you're towing doesn't exceed your capacity and tongue weight for classII, then get what I think is called "add a ball?" It s a stem that screws into the hitch hole just like a ball does, except you add whatever ball size you want onto the stem. It has a push rod thru the middle that attaches the ball to the stem. Make sure you get the heavy duty one that will take all 3 ball sizes. I HIGHLY recommend you spend the extra money and get stainless steel. A year or so from now when its all frozen up from rust, you'll be glad you did. I've been transferring the same add a ball for close to 15 years now from vehicle to vehicle.
