It costs $7 plus change for a replacement with the little O ring. Cheap insurance. I haven't stripped mine (yet). But I'll have an extra in case I do. The plug is brass because it is easier to replace the plug than it is the manifold.
OK senior moment here…….is this the Ford fix or aftermarket, or ..
Greetings....
Just reading all the posts on the water drain and all the stripped
plugs....
Seems like a good way to go is a brass valve and a few fittings....
If this has been covered before, forgive me, but with the frequency
of the drain 'n checks, why not a valve in the first place?
My SD 6.0 will picked up on July 1 and one of the first things I'll
do is look into putting something in to make this maintenance check easier.
Simply take a small cup, drain liquid from valve into cup, then taste.
If it tastes like water, you've need to drain more. If it tastes like
diesel, then you're o.k....
Good idea or bad?
If it does not taste like water will you get real bad gas
Gas? I thought these things ran on oil.
By the way, is there anyone else in AZ that doesn't have to drain their water? I have 8000 miles on my truck now and I haven't drained it yet. I'm thinking because there is negative humidity here. I have some friends with 7.3's and they say they never drain theirs because they don't need to due to the dryness and fresh supply of diesel at all the major truck stops. Should I check it even though no idiot lights came on?

Bought it at the Ford parts counter at the dealership I use. I don't have a problem with the existing one. But....(being **** retentive again)
The problem with extra plumbing is that it's a non standard thread and if you have a 4x4 the front drive shaft runs right in front of the plug leaving some clearance but not much. So if you figure additional hardware and some "soft" clearance, there's not enough room.
One of the techs over on http://6literpowerstroke.flatratetech.com/ Message Forums, took a plug, "drilled out 5/16 hole through the plug and tapped it with a 1/4 pipe thread then went to the hardware store and found a elbow and petcock for under 5$ that would fit with no problem all brass". Sounds like a good idea if someone is handy.

You have to love the reverse thinking here; too dry..sucks all the moisture right out of the fuel. I am not sure but I believe diesel fuel is not hydroscopic.
Theory notwithstanding, do drain it once in awhile.
"If it aint broke (or the light isn't on) you don't fix it"
I have 21,000 miles on my 6.0L and have never had a problem. Dealer replaced fuel filters during the 15,000 mile service and I run Power Service in every other tank. Power Service says it "emulsifies" water... which I think means it breaks it down so it can be burned with no ill effects.
Also another wise man said the following as well....
"He who runs behind a 6.0L PSD will be exhausted!!!!"
"He who stands in front of a 6.0L PSD gets tired!!!!"

Despite the fact that it says to draint it once a month in the Owners Manual? If you worry about those C94's so much, I would do the draining. And, I do.
I took mine for water light being on and they replaced my drain plug when they replaced the sensor with the steel one. They said they have been having many problems with them striping out.
Why don't you drain the whole thing? Tech at my dealership said he lets it run out every time...so thats what I did. Any adverse effects? I didn't wait for the water in fuel light...figured after 2000 miles its about time for some preventative maintanence. I also asked him about putting a petcock on and he said that it is not a good idea. He stated if something hits it, you can have fuel leaking and not know it causing the engine to run rough.

Hydroscopic? Does that mean diesel is not afraid of water?
