rearend strengh

How long do you think a 8.8 rearend will last if i have a 390 engine , I love wheeling, so i will be climbing , muddin and towing with this truck. Can this rearend handle this big block or should swap it for a heavier duty rear.

How heavy is your truck? How much gear are you carrying? What's it in? How big tires? If you’re talking serious mudding and hills and rocks, you can't go wrong with a stronger rear!!!!!!!

The other question is - how powerful is the 390? Most 390s in factory condition where cranking less then 200 hp (net) and around 200 fpt (net) when new. If its in fair running condition it's probably a lot less 20+ years later. About what a EFI 302 was in the mid 90s, hardly enough to cause concern. If you've jacked with it for more power find a good 9" and forget about it.

The truck is a 83' f-150 , the weight is approx. 6300lbs. not sure of the gears right now , but plan on putting 4.56 gears and running 35's or 37 tires.also i know this 390 has well over 200hp , you would why if you drove the truck it is in now . the 69' weighs over 7000lbs with 1 ton axles front and rear.and it hauls some butt.[U]thanks for your info, i wll let know how it goes.

It'll probably last at least to the first good romping with 37s. I think your '83 should have a 9" from the factory though..
