Iown a 94.5 psd with 279,000 miles on it,when I start it up in the morning there is alot of blue smoke, the temp.here lately in the morning is still cold sometimes. But once it warms up it seems to be fine,is this normal. Please reply.
If it's pretty cold, the blue smoke is most likely from incomplete combustion in the cylinders. About every diesel will do that when it's cold. It will tend to get worse the older the engine gets. As you stated, it should go away once the truck is warmed up, which is normal. If it still smokes when it is warm, I would worry a little bit about it.
Sounds like you have an injector o-ring problem. Blue/white smoke is usually the result of both unburned fuel and oil. At your mileage if the o-rings have never been replaced I would definately change them. At that mileage you might consider replacing the injectors while you have the valve covers off. You can usually get new injectors with o-rings already installed which makes it easier if you're doing it yourself. The cost of the injectors would probably equal the labor you would pay to have someone else change the o-rings anyway. I know, it's big bucks, but something you might consider. I would also recommend changing all the glow plugs while you have the valve covers off whether they are working or not. It saves the time/labor later.
Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way. How does the injector o-rings affect smoke? Is there oil getting through the o-ring and into the cylinder or what is going on??
Thanks.
I have a 95 with about 80,000 miles and have noticed the same thing. Is it possible the injector O Rings are leaking on mine too. The truck did sit for about 1 1/2 years due to a death in the family. What is a good place to get the entire injector? For that matter is there a better replacement for the stock injectors, I will be adding a Tymar and 4" exhaust straight piped with the 3" downpipe.(if we get enough response to the group purchase). I have to replace the glow plugs anyhow so I might as well do it all at once. Thanks
Tasslehoff13, at only 80K miles it would be a waste of money IMO to replace the stock injecters. You can upgrade for added performance, but you MUST have gauges, exhaust, and a larger intake or you will run into trouble with engine temps and may cause serious damage. A little white smoke at startup is normal, excessive smoke/blue-white smoke, is usually a sign of failing o-rings.
my 03 (bought new) smokes light blue for a minute or two when its cold out. after that it can sit for an hr. or so and theres no smoke. only the first start of the day when its 30 degrees or colder plugged in or not. I considered this to be normal for these engines? (psd. newbe)i've read where others say they get little or no smoke on a cold start??? my kubota tractor cold starts with a little black smoke then clears up in seconds, can anyone explain this?
