every once in a while, i will be driving and i put the clutch in, and my engine just stumbles and dies. its not too big of a problem because it starts right up again, but it is bothersome. i recently had a head job and the guy who did it told me that the whinning coming from my speakers was because, whoever installed the stereo system installed it wrong...something to do with wiring it to the ignition. could this have anything to do with it?
thanks for the help, kellen.
it's a 1997 F-150, mileage is about 68,000,but it has been doing this since i bought the truck with 39,000 miles, i recently had a head gasket job, but the truck did it before that.
the alternator whine you are hearing is from the power and remote cables being too close. I can send you an link to the Rockford Fosgate site that tells you exactly how ot wire up a system.
Your " Idle Air Control " solenoid is resopnsible for the idle speed of your truck. Sometime's it can get sticky or slow to respond, and the result is your engine will die before the rpm's can be stabilized. I'm not sur if it can be cleaned, but they are not that expensive, I don't think anyway. If you don't have a Haynes manual, the go get one, and read up on the IAC valve. Also make sure of the simple stuff , like no vacuum leaks, air filter is clean, fuel filter is clean, or new. Sounds like something simple to me, but definitely not the stereo power wiring. HorizonHuskies is right about another way to connect power w/ no noise, follow his link or search 'em out on Google or something.

Garrett
please send me that link, i would really appreciate it
Welcome to FTE. Glad to have you here in the 4.2 forum.
I suspect Thomas might be on to it. I'd check the IAC and look for vacuum leaks.
Perhaps the throttle poistion sensor might be suspect as well.
I assume when you press the clutch in you are also letting of the accelerator. That is to say, pressing in the clutch is not causing it to die, pressing in the clutch and letting off the gas IS causing it to die.
As far as the stereo wiring...I can't see that being a part of the problem.
BTW so you know the clutch has nothin to do it hit dieing...most liekly. It is JUST letting off the gas that kills it., thing is, wehn you are still in gear, your transmission is still turning and in turn turning your crank and keeping the motor running that is hte only reason it happens when you push in the clutch if you rev it and take your foot off the gas while staying in neutral the same thing will most likely happen.
ya, i agree with you guys about the clutch, i dont think it has anything to do with that, i can usually feel the engine losing power as i am roling up to a stop, and then when i put the clutch in and let off the gas it will die, or i can rev it up to about 4 grand it will usually correct itself, and sometimes it drops to almost dead and jumps back up to idle. this does not happen on a daily basis though... just sometimes. anyways i got the haynes manual today so i will read up on your suggestions. thanks a lot guys! let me know if you have anymore advice.
