Guessing at an 8 inch with 2.79's if it's a 2bbl, not a GT or GTA (knew a guy with a '66 289 GTA. Thought those were all 390's then, and I still think it now, but it was a 289 and it had GTA all over it, not just the hood......
I remember the 427 Fairlane.....didn't they make about 50 of them, just to be legal for drag racing? I have a May '04 Mustang and Ford Trader. There is a 427 Fairlane for $60,000. Seller does not claim it's a factory original, but at that price it could be.
I thought 427's were all 4 speeds and were basically factory racers with fiberglass hoods with pins, no hinges and stuff like that there. GTA would be an automatic and fancy trim. I do not think a 427 was a regular option on the Fairlane.
Well, this isn't helping the 289 c4 mystery.... no doubt the 427 had a nine inch.
That car was call a Thunderbolt , Ford made 100 cars for the year of 1964 , 48 were made with auto. trans and 52 with a 4 speed, and all with 427, A rare car to have, i got this Info out of " MOTOR CITY MUSCLE " the high-powered history of the AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR book, a Mike Mueller, MBI publishing company cool book. PAGE 112.
Yes, I remember the T-Bolts. But in '66, I am pretty sure the 427 was a very limited production item as well. I remember Hot Rod getting one and talking about having to have two guys to pull the hood the check the oil.
Anyway, on the original post, if that 66 is straight, rearends are a dime a dozen, just buy it and you can probably double your money if you put some mags & a chrome air cleaner on it. Triple your money if you put 427 stickers on it and convince the next guy you blew up the 427 racing and besides, the 289 gets better milage and with open pipes, no one will know.
