Since my truck is my only mode of transportation I cant have long extended down times. So I'm going to buy a second front end and rebuild it in my garage at my leisure, then swap it out on a weekend.
Only problem is I don't exactly know which front end I have. Here is the info off the tag on the pumpkin.
I know the 4.10 states the gear ratio but don't know if the other points to a DANA 44 or not. Here are the pics of it. Please tell me what i'm dealing with here. Its a 1991 F250 Diesel.
I know Ford had 2 axles available for that model. They were the Dana 44-IFS-HD and the Dana 50-IFS. Both had leaf spring front suspension. Check the pumpkin for some stamped numbers. I have a '92 F150 with the D-44 front axle. There are 2 big 4's stamped on the pumpkin. I hope this info will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the pointers guys. I'll grab a wire brush and see what I can find, at least I know what to look for now.
BTW I now hate the easter bunny!!!! I got a little upset with the spare tire bracket and sawsalled that POS out from under my truck!! The spare can ride in the bed from now on!! (the brackets were bent and made turning them to loosen them impossilbe)
That is the Dana 50 TTB axle. If you look at the Drivers side traction beam it is slightly larger than the D44 TTB beam. I would replace that tire before you make a mess of something.
The truck is a new purchase and those are the tires it came with. I pulled the blistered one off that day.
I found a sticker that pointed toward the 50 and everything I had found said that a diesel 4x4 would most likely come with the 50 and not the 44, so I was leaning toward it being a 50 anyway.
I'm hoping to completely rebuild the front end befor I have to get new tires. Its really WAY out of alinment, and with the shape the tierods are in I doubt a alinment shop would even attempt it without replacing them. The tierods are jus the begining thought. Their isn't one U-joint that still has its needle bearings, and the list goes on. So i'm hoping to rebuild a replacement front end with new everything, and perhaps give it a slight lift to level the truck.
So if any of you guys in the Houston area have a whole front end (Dana 50) you would sell me shoot me an email at val@shsu.edu
Was the solid axle Dana 60 rare or someting?? It seems to be hard to find unelss you have coil springs.
I would do the Dana 60 straight axle conversion, since you're replacing the whole frontend anyways and planning to lift it too. Dana 60 front axles can be found under F350 4x4's. '91 and earlier used kingpins, '92 and later used ball joints. Since you already have leaf springs, this should be a good swap. Did you check out the straight axle swap info in the tech articles section of this website? You will also need the tracking arm and brackets from the F350 truck that connects the axle to the frame. Also get the tie rods for the straight axle.
are those king pin front ends closed knuckle? i thought that they quit making the closed knouckle front end in the mid 70's? does anybody have picks or more info?
