I used to carry a 'Country Whittler' by Frost Cutlery, good 2 bladed knife, quit carrying it b/c one time I thought I lost it I freaked out b/c I got it for graduation. Turns out a recliner ate it, but I found it. So I went back to carrying my single blade Gerber, it's been good to me. I also have a Gerber multitool I got for free, it's good as well. -BBB
I like my buck knife but i carry my kershaw scallion to school. we have a rule that you can carry pocket knifes if the blade is no longer than the width of your hand.
I have carried knives of varying sizes for many years. I almost feel naked without a knife on me. I have cased belt knives, pocket knives, clipped belt knives, multi-tools, etc... and they all have some kind of specific use and time that they are carried. You might get the impression that I collect knives if you saw the little cedar box I keep my spares in. I don't get into those "fancy" knives though. I'd be embarrassed to pull one of them out in front of someone. ( I'd probably blush if I used one when alone !!)
My most often carried is my Swiss Army knife, though. I have a folding pocket knife with a Copenhagen symbol on it that I found laying in the road. It's pretty dandy because it has a serrated knife that you can cut a radiator hose or a tire in half and it'll still be sharp. The knife I carry to work is a little NRA folding knife that makes a good letter opener.
Anyway, thats my two knives worth on that subject!
Been with knives since I was 5 (which was way back when TVs were kerosene-powered). I used to think that those multi-tool things were yuppie contraptions, but then I got myself a Gerber. Must use it 20 times a day or more. It's out and open with one hand, which brings me to a concept I read about in a knife magazine.
Sometimes people carry knives for protection, and they are good tools in the right hands. The key is in the hand. If it is truly to be counted on as a defensive weapon, it must be readily available. If you have to dig around in your pocket to find it, and then use two hands to open it, it's useless for defense. Sheath knives are more suitable, but don't lend themselves to most social situations. An easy-open (thumb stud, thumb hole, etc.) folder with a self-locking blade, and a pocket clip can be carried very unobtrusively, yet "accessed" very rapidly.
Of course, it has to be sharp, or else it's not a knife.
My favorite knife that I use everyday is a Smith & Wesson S.W.A.T. knife 3 3/4 in blade. It has enough heft to be a small hammer and maintains a sharp edge as well as it is tough as hell.
A Veteranarian once performed emergency surgery with it...
I have to recommend the KA-BAR. Tough, rugged, sharp, battle-proven.

I carry one of the first USMC fighting utility KaBars with me hunting/fishing...its a badass fixed blade. I wish I could afford one of the D2 folders but they are abit insanely priced. I had one of the cheaper 40 dollar folders and it didnt hold up to well at all...chipped the tip off and broke it w/o much use.
