Turbo Surge
I have a 2003 f250 SD Lariat Crew Cab with 11,000 miles. The only mods I have done are adding Boost, Pyro and Trans Temp guages. So far my problems have been minimal. A little oil on the flywheel cover, and the rolling idle and smoke on starting, but this one has me a little worried.
About three weeks ago, I started to notice that with the throttle held at a constant position, and the RPM and speed not changing, that I could hear and see (on the boost guage) the turbo changing RPM. The truck was not surging, but the sound was as if I was in and out of the throttle. The change in boost is about 3 or 4 pounds, and it doesn't matter if I'm 35 MPH and only making 3 or 4 pounds anyway, or if I'm on the highway making 10 pounds, as soo as the throttle is steady, the surge starts. I noticed today for the first time that it was starting to do it under normal acceleration, like from a stoplight. If I really stand on it, the boost is steady at about 25 pounds, but as soon as I level out, here it comes.
I'm just wondering I anyone else has heard of this. I know it has to go to the dealer, I'm just really curious.
Thanks for any and all your help!

Stay tuned you will have some good replies on this.
Had this same problem. Long story short went to dealer 5 times and was getting ready to call lemon law atty when they finally took my suggestion and installed the black box. So tired of hearing "there is nothing wrong with the truck" Ford regional rep looked at the data and detemined that one of the three atmospheric sensors in the intake system was faulty. 15,000 miles since with no problem. Truck would sometimes get really quit at idle as if the pilot injection was working, and would also trip the P2263 code for "phantom" egr.
Good luck with it.
Get the black box installed, you wont be sorry.
Dave
Thanks
This is what you need
I thought of a little more info that might help diagnose this. My guages are ISSPRO, and the directions for the install werer not too clear on where to hook up the boost line on the 6.0. I found what I assumed (hmmm) to be the Mass Air Sensor bolted to a bracket on the a/c-heater box on the firewall. There was the proper size rubber line running from it to the intake, so this is where I put it. The guage shows boost, but under anything but the lightest acceleration, the guage rattles. the harder I hit it, the louder it rattles. I finally saw the needle vibrate just a little bit,(it's very difficult to look close at a guage while speeding dowm the highway) but I don't know if I have a faulty guage, or is this normal. I wouldn't think that the pressure coming from the turbo would pulse like that, but I'm also no diesel mechanic. Did I cut into the right line? If not, could this be the cause of the turbo surge? If there is a leak at the connection, could that cause it?
I promise I'll ask an easy question next time....
