Towed down to Vegas from NW Washington this past week. Tow down went well, lost power on one pass, then it was fine. On the way back? POP. Down she went. Middle of Nevada. 30 miles outside Hawthorne. I called roadside assistance they said to keep driving. Right. I can only go 30 MPH MAYBE. Anyway. Limped in. They cant get me a tow till the AM. I call in the AM, 4 hours later a wrecker shows. I go to Fallon NV 70 mi away. Blown Turbo. We might have one by Monday. Im screwed. Thankfully I was traveling with my Stepdad an Mom. Took his trailer to Fallon, came back got mine, stored it and rode home with them. Now I get to fly back next weekend and pick everything back up and Ford MIGHT pay for it by my dealer doesnt think so. NEAT.
What a horror story! I hope it works out for you in the end. And I do think Ford should pay for your expenses. Read the fine print in your warranty and road side assistance, talk to Ford.
Friend of mine got into problems last year in Arizona with his 8.0L GMC truck, cracked head. GM stepped up to the till.
Sorry to hear about your troubles. I agree, Ford should pay for your expenses since your truck left you stranded. Please post what they say went wrong with the turbo.
johnsdiesel,
my mistake, sorry, I thought something looked funny when I read the post but could not put my finger on it. Of course the largest Vortec is an 8.1L!

Be sure to keep very accurate notes on who when and what they say.
I may have missed "the loop" on this one, but could you give us a history of the truck (age, mileage, repairs).
Does this type of situation now confirm/suggest that when one purchases a new/used 6.0L truck that as part of the purchase agreement, an added clause be inserted to cover any and all subsequently incurred expenses directly due to the trucks being down. Such as being stranded in Nevada. My point is that the probability of there being additionally incurred out of pocket expenses due directly to the down time is becoming rather high. Let's face it, the 6.0L engine's failures result in not only the warranty repairs, but also out of pocket expenses incurred by the truck owner. Stranded in Nevada ! ! !
Picture in your mind, now trying to sell your 6.0L truck in the future, with this type of history. Talk about a loss of depreciation, just by having that name: Ford's (built tough, don't forget ) 6.0L engine............
Ill keep ya all posted on what goes on. I sold my Chev for this beast and have already called my Chev dealer to get some idea on a new truck. This was not and is not a good experience. Best part? My Step Dad's F350 made some similar noises on the way back. Not good.
Truck is a 03/04 Aug of 03 motor/build. 4K miles. No problems up till now.
Started with a noise when I lifted the throttle, followed by a feeling like it was stuck in tow/haul and wanted to engine brake not accel. This was the trip over. Then on the way back, similar simptoms then a loud whirring (almost like a washer pump at full tilt) and black smoke. Limped in to find oil dripping from the muffler.
Ill talk to my selling dealer tomorrow (talked to him briefly on Fri, he was trying to help)
Did you have your tow feature engaged (button on right side of steering column)? Do you have any chip or exhaust mods? How much weight were you towing? Just checking I will be doing some light towing this summer and want to be prepared for worse case scenario.

Had tow/haul in at times, cruise on at times....no programmer or exhaust.....
I had the same thing. They might check your intercooler, on the turbo side [passenger side], blows the orange gasket out. But have them check the turbo with the computer. Mine was putting out over 31lbs of boost, so the trucks computer sinced a overboost problem and was trying to shut the motor down. Only took my dealer about 4months, 2 egr vaulves, 2 sensors, 2 intercoolers, 1 pipe&hose that comes off turbo, before they found that it was the turbo. All this happened only when I was towing a 28.5 5th wheel. Good luck.

Does not sound like diagnostics, it sounds like a part changer.
Another thing to check for if the turbo is bad is fuel in the engine oil from leaking injectors. Some 03 motors have had injectors leak fuel, which ends up in the oil. The excess fuel in the oil will starve the turbo bearings for lubrication causing them to fail.
There is alot of information on this site about bad injectors and fuel in the oil.
THis kind of situation is why EVERYONE, whether or not you tow, should get a boost gauge and EGT gauge installed on your diesel before your drive past your house. If you had those gauges you would have seen the problem before you burnt the turbo. Make sure to get those gauges!!!
