I have a ministock mustang(86) with the 4 cylinder engine. When the car gets to about 6000 rpms it develops a miss. It seems to run find under that. I have replaced the plug wires, changed the ignition from the duraspark box to a GM, HEI unit, changed the coil to a coil from a 89 mustang,(E-coil) and so far I haven't cured the problem. Do Pickup coils possibly cause this type of problem or possibly weak valve springs? I am at a loss and becoming frustrated with this. I am hoping some new input from some of you guys would help!!!! thanx. wnk.
All I can add to your quest for answers is a possible explanation. I also own an Acura (made by Honda) that I know ALOT more about than this Ranger I have. On the Hondas there is a fuel cutoff that kicks in at your computers pre-programed redline. So if you hit the redline you can't over-rev and blow the engine.
I have no idea if this applies to your Mustang, but 6000rpm sounds kind of high for a 2.3L Ford engine. Also, some of us truck guys have to make due without a Tach in the dash, so I couldn't tell you for sure if I have ever hit 6K. My buttcheek dyno says NO. In any gear, hitting 6K would require pushing the truck past what it was designed to do. (IE - being reckless)
