Well I installed the gages last night. Every thing went along fine until I idled the engine after completed probe install in the exhaust manifold. It definitly sounded like something went thru the turbo, (noise and engine falter). I turned it off immediatly. then restarted it and no noise and all. Seems O.K. I took it for a test drive, highway and city and see no adverse effects. But let me tell you the only thing I feared in this whole installation project, happened, could not believe it, like a nightmare.
I cleaned out the hole with a magnet on a bent wire, used a bent cue tip, shop vacced the hole with small end after drilling and also after tapping and finally started the engine with the hole open and never did see many chips. My question is - - Do you think there is any damage? Have to drive this thing out of town tomorrow and I have to admit this whole thing is not very confidence building. Waddauthink?
Firstly - let your blood pressure go down :-)
it's not the end of the world... Al Queerda is trying for that :-)
I DOUBT that your probe fell apart... nor damaged your turbo...
you'd KNOW it if it did...
but I would take the few minutes to back out the probe and look at it...
does it register EGT's properly ?
if so, you didn't lose the probe...
good luck and keep us posted...
Well now I don;t know what to think. I did take the truck on a 5 hr. freeway trip after probe install and all was well. But- - When I took it on a little jaunt this morning and parked it for two hrs. and then started it, it stumbled and faltered and quit. I restarted it and it started surging and running rough at idle. I was trying to leave this parking garage and get back home cuz I thought it would quit again. I had to keep my foot on the brake to calm the dangerous power surges while at idle under way to exit garage. When I got out to the street, it quit all this surging stuff and now runs great. Is this all just coincidental to my original egt probe concern?
The EGT gauge works just fine. The noise and engine falter in original post, ocurred only on initial start up after install. It never entered my mind that the probe end came off. I was just concerned that maybe some chips went thru turbo and caused that noise etc. I think, what I am hearing is that little chips wouldn't do all that, and not to worry unless probe end is missing, Is that the concensus.
