Tonight I washed the '91 Grand Marguis. No problem. Went and washed the '86 F-150 and have a problem. I go to one of those "do-it-yourself" carwashes. Have been going to the same one for years now. This time when I got home and started wiping the truck down I noticed scratches . . . everywhere. It is clear that they are from the soap dispensing brush I used at the carwash. Now, I'm only hoping that it is the wax that is scratched. The last time the truck was waxed was last fall and it has been washed a few times since then. I don't think the brush could have scratched the paint that bad, or could it have? I tried rubbing with a rag and a scrubbing brush here at home just to see, but nothing happened. Any idea about these sort of scratches? I plan to wax the truck sometime this spring or early summer, but if it is the paint that is scrathed, will wax make them disappear from view? Just kind of looking for advice and also venting a bit. The truck also seemed a little extra faded this time around.
Hopefully they will polish out,but what I think happens at the car wash is,the guy who used the brush before you scrubbed the mud off the bottom of his vehicle and the debris was still in the brush when you went to use it,I saw it happen to somebody and ever since then I always use the spray first, wetting down my truck and washing out the soap brush before I use it.
Sadly, accidents with the brush happen very frequently, and its because of what he just said: People dont clean out the brush after usage. I will never use the brush, and will always use a clean rag to scrub it down and rinse it off afterwards. It may take about 15 minutes longer, but it is definitely worth it in the long run.
As for the scratches, my guess is they are in the paint. I had a 94 that had a lot of scratches, and I bought this stuff, I think it was from turtle wax, called scratch and swirl remover. It is made for the types of scratches you are talking about (not extremely deep or wide, but ones you can see and were probably caused by rubbing) After using it the first time, 90% of the scratches were invisible to the eye, and the truck shined almost like new. And after using it, I would suggest wiping down the truck every night with a soft, dry rag. The scratch and swirl remover will keep the trucks finish slick allowing you to wipe off all dirt and even water after a rainstorm so you dont have to keep waxing and washing. Just a tip.
