TC Fluid Change

Alright I'm laying in the driveway and my dad walks up."what cha doin"
me:" I'm changing the fluid in my torque converter"

dad: "Your WHAT"
me: "you deaf:
dad: "how are you going to do that "
me: "there is a DRAIN PLUG"
dad: "I wouldn't do that if I were you"
me: "how come"
Dad:" haow ya gonna get it back in"
me: "through th dip stick"

so after muucch discussion I kinda see his point. I,ve only helped change 15 or so auto-tranny's, and he is right, I always fillem first. I's this going to be a problem? It is already draining by the way.
Also napa sold me dexronIII/mercon.
97 f150 4x4
4.6l
4r70w
dipstick says mercon
I know fluids are important and I wanted to know if this is right for my truck.
Thanks in advance

You have correct fluid and you are on the right track for drain and refill. The torque converter is drained; then refilled by front pump running. Generally put 4 quarts in pan through dipstick hole with funnel. Start the engine and slowly add rest of fluid until you reach cold capacity. Do not overfill. Drive and recheck and add fluid to get in hot operating range on dipstick. Recheck level a few more times in following days in case you have air bubble in system.
