@#%!$%, every PSD I listen to has the same idle knock as mine. I have yet to hear one that does not! I am not sure if mine even has idle knock..........Does anybody have a wav file I can listen to with idle knock????? Have not done line/tank mods yet, before dropping the tank I want to verify if I even have idle knock or cackle before I take the time for the mods......DANG IT!!!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Aug-02 AT 09:49 PM (EST)]Hey ceejay, yeah I think there might be some confusion about cackle and idle knock, which are 2 separate sounds. Cackle occurs off-idle, and most people hear it between 1200-1800 rpm. Cackle doesn't occur at idle.
From what I've heard, the Long Lead injector in cylinder #8, which was Ford's "fix" for the cackle, causes the idle knock. The knock is the sound of cylinder #8 being over-fueled.
Getting the air out of the fuel system (with the tank and pre-pump mods) gets rid of the cackle and as a side benefit, usually stops or reduces the idle knock, and then you can replace the LL#8 injector with a regular one if you want and make the knock go away for good.
Anyway, that's the way I understand it.
Go to www.ford-diesel.com/downloads/index.php3 and listen to "cacklestop.wav" This is NOT cackle, but a good sound clip of idle knock. Listen to "nocackle1.wav" for a comparison.
At www.texastowncar.com , listen to "cackle2.wav" Notice that this is around 1500 rpm, and about 3/4 through the sound clip you can hear it pretty well. Also note that this guy's engine doesn't sound as noisy (less "clatter") as some powerstrokes. (On Edit: this could just be the way the sound was recorded, so it's best to go listen to other trucks. All the "quiet" ones I heard were mostly in Texas, none in California where I live.)
I know that even though the HEUI injectors are supposed to be noisy, I've heard PSDs that were pretty darn quiet... no "clatter."
I've installed a high-pressure oil crossover line, it's claimed that this will quiet the engine down considerably, but I have my doubts. It didn't cost that much, so if nothing happens, no big deal. I'll find out in a couple hundred miles I guess.
HHHHHHMMMMMMMM! If I had to guess, LW555, I would say that mine sounds more like a "normal" PSD should sound like. That idle knock in the "idle Knock" wave, sounds a lot harsher than what I am hearing. It is a similar sound, but about three times as loud. I think I'll wait a little bit and see if the frequency changes much before I start mods. My combined fuel mileage is at about 16.4-16.6 empty. How does this compare!!!!! I have not had it on a long trip yet to see true highway mileage.
ceejay, well it's good to hear that yours isn't too loud.
When my truck was bone stock, I got around 19-20 mpg. I drove 15 miles each way to work, about half freeway and half stoplights. The truck was new though, so I drove pretty easy and I think that's why it was so good. Now I get about 16mpg, but I drive with a heavy foot and I've got mileage-robbing big tires.
Finally read your pm, did you get a chance to try the clear hose?
LW555, Have not tried the clear hose, I did make it under though, looked things over, then got side tracked and never went back in. I did get all the "stuff" to do it though. When I get a little more time to play with it, I'll get it don and let everybody know my results.....

Been following this and similar posts on knocking a cackle, interesting descriptions. Never defined beyond human terms like "tinny sound", "seems like" . For me that is no help, not quantifiable. Here is what I suggest, maybe we can get it done with Joe's and Ken's help. If it is a "knock" it has a frequency at a certain engine RPM, probably a harmonic of net engne RPM, or sub-harmonic possibly a harmonic or sub harmonic of pump vane pass. Maybe Joe knows what specific frequency to look for and will tell us. I don't think that I have this problem, the knock, and don't think that it is a problem anyway. But my hearing is damaged from years of high speed equipment exposure. I could take my CSI 2120A-2 real time vibration analyzer a accelerometer and record a series of vibration spectra and time wave form of my 02 PSD engine. Maybe that would tell us something. Ken may be able to tell us a way that I could post that info, kinda like a photo. It may be that once you see the quantifiable data that you decide that it is not a problem of mechanical significance. Anyone interested?
Well, darn, Oneof6, if all us novices were as technically advanced and knowledgeable as others on this forum, we would not have to ask the questions. To some of us "less sophisticated" shadetrees, the best we can do is to describe our noise concerns to more experienced people like you, Ken, and Joe. I understand the concept of frequencies and so forth, but as for the technical part, I as well as others depend on knowledgeable people. I hold comments from you and others very high as to the correct way to diagnose problems with our PSD's. Everybody that has answered any of my posts has given very valuable information that I consider a correct and accurate way to solve problems, or at the very least decide that it may not be a problem at all. Well, that's just my $.02. Just be patient with us less sophisticated PSD fans...........Keep up the good work....

I checked your serial number and everything looks above average except horse power, which was about average. That probably means it was a little tight when we ran it. It passed on the first run and was built, tested and shipped on 2/12/01. There were no defects logged and it went straight through the system without a hitch.
