I have a 1988 Ranger 2.9 L 2WD Truck with automatic. When I first got it it ran OK, but last summer it lost spark. Here is what I have done so far-
1. Replaced Coil.
2. Replaced the Ignition Module
3. Tried another computer
4. Replaced the PIP
I do not get any scan codes and still have no igntion as seen by spark. I don't get any fuel pump action unless I run a jumper wire to the fuel pump circuit and then I get fuel pumping and gas is at pressure to the injectors. On the wires to the coil I have 12 volts on the + terminal with the igniton on. The - wire on the coil does not show a ground. Any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot?
Thanx,
Todd
Check the wires from the altenator, The plugins are known for fring and this is what caused my son's 89 to do this. Hook up another car on the jumper cables like your giving it a boost and see if it will run with the other car running and jumper cables hooked up. Mech friend told me this. If it works then its one of the harness wires on the alt. worth a check.
Could also be the EEC power relay, it supplies voltage to fuel pump relay/injectors/ECM etc etc.. Voltage to the coil comes directly from the ignition switch.
One other thing, pull the cap and make sure the rotor rotates while you are cranking it over,I have seen some with a stripped gear on the distributor, but dont forget to unplug the coil first
1. I will check the Alternator wires and do the jump thing as that could do it.
2. The distributor gear is not stripped as I had it out when the PIP was changed - it would be a good idea to pull the cap and make sure the rotor is going round.
3. I will change the relay!!!
