Where is the best place to run the power and ground for my amp in my 93 Bronco? It'll be in the back, probably mounted in one of the map pockets. I've already got the wires from the stereo to the amp, I just need to find a hole in the firewall or something for the power.
Under the carpet at the front passenger's feet there is a large plastic cap that covers a body mounting bolt. I ran my power cable through there a few days ago.
I have yet to find a good easy to reach grounding point. Now I'm thinking of getting more cable and running the ground back into the engine compartment through the same spot. Though it seams like there should be a better solution then that.
I had a hell of a problem finding a spot. What I did was take off the bracket for the back seat latch. You need to keep the ground wire no longer than a foot from the amp or you will get a lot of alternater noise. I hope you don't have the problem I did with that latch. my bolts broke and I had to drill them out and clean up the threads but that is where I found to be the best spot. Also use the largest diameter wire that will connect to your amp. If you know anything about electricity you know it flows from Negative to Positive so your ground wire is actually the incoming power. Hence if you have and oversized wire you won't have any resistance and get more power.
You can avoid alternator noise witha suppressor on the ground or a braided grounding strap too. The nearest factory ground is chassis ground "I" located in the left rear of the cargo area near the taillight assembly.
I put the ground on mine in the bracket for the back seat latch too. The amp wire kit I had made it so I just took out the bolt , slid the end over it, and reattached it.
You can run a power wire through the black plastic box on the passenger side near the fire wall. Just keep it out of the fan and you can drop it right down and under the carpet. I felt better about drilling through plastic than steel where I couldn't see wires etc. I ran my power to my amp in the center console. Helped me use up that ungodly amount of space
if you use my idea make sure you use that black cable wrap protectant as the wires end up close to the hood support...would suck to cut the wires when you drop the lid.
locate a hole in the fire wall and run a pair of large gage wires up to the battery. take your power directly off of the battery . this voltage is clean and filtered . they make fuse kits for this purpose. just remember you CANT ever have a cable that is too large.if you want to switch the voltage you can use a relay
