I have a 95 XLT that has 65K on it an the steering box is going. I have tightened the adjustment as far as I would like and I am now thinking of replacing it with a rebuilt one. I haven't done this before and would like to know the difficulty rating and if there are any special tricks or tool. Also if you have any aftermarket prat suggestions I would welcome them too.
I just had one installed in my 88. You can get one at Napa or most any parts house.
You should be able to pick one up for under $200. Installation is not too hard if you have some mechanical ability, otherwise let a front end shop tackle the project. I had mine installed for $80.labor. Ask if they will install your gearbox then shop around for the best price. Autozone has a lifetime warranty on most of their parts. Good Luck.
I replaced mine a couple of years ago with an autozone rebuilt unit. The only special tool I needed was a puller to get the pittman arm off the shaft. The shop might have a loaner tool. The box is pretty heavy so get a good grip on it before you pull the last bolt. After you install it there's a bleeding procedure, it's in the Haynes manual.
