Talking Timing Chains...

Need some opinions...I have a 98 Eddie Bauer V6 4.0 w/ 122k. The timing chain has been replaced via the recall 4 times and the damn thing is sounding like a disel again. What do you think I should do? The last repair was in March 2003.

The great thing about this is that when my wife first got the SUV it happened in the first 20k and the dealer service manager said,"Oh its was nothing but design. I called a friend who worked for Ford dealer in another state and he faxed me the recall. You should have see the jaw on the service manager when I brought it to him and ask,"Are you sure that it is design? Not a problem with the Chain? He kept saying yep I'm 100% sure. Then I drop the fax on his desk and he basically Crapped his pants. I just looked at him and said,"You'll have it done by tomorrow? Right?"

OUCH, 4 times in 120K, that gets EXPENSIVE. Apparently you have the SOHC & apparently Ford hasnt gone to the trouble of upgrading those miserable chains. Sometimes it takes the aftermarket suppliers to come up with a solution to lousy engineering. Have you checked with Napa?
Good job with the recall notice, i'd love to have seen the look on the guys face.

Sad to say but my next vehicle is going to be a pickup truck because of this engine issue (kinda want to get another PU anyway). I usually buy late model With high miles (over 100K) and expect to get at least another 100K out of them. I own a 92 and 97 Exp with the OHV so I won't be without one for a while. I'll be letting you guys test out the "improved" timing chain for a while and see how that goes. Love to have the performance, but I want something reliable at 160K and not going to be pulling engines for that problem. I don't mind changing a tranny so much, but I'm getting old!
