brakes

i hear squeaking of the brakes in my 98 explorer. when should i think about replacing them? asap or in a few weeks?

You should pull your wheels and see how much pad you have left. Squeaking doesn't always mean that you have reached the wear indicator.

But don't wait too long either...if the pads or shoes are at or past the wear indicator and you wait too long, you will have to replace the rotors or drums instead of just the pads or shoes...

If you can't remember when you last had a brake job or it's been over 40k miles, don't wait one day get them pads changed.
