My ranger has 298,000 miles on it but still runs well. I'm noticing some valve rattle. I'm using 89 octane fuel. Other than 298,000 miles, what could be the solution to this problem?
Which engine do you have? I'm not sure when Ford went to the 2.9, but if you have the 2.8, the valves are adjustable. They are set cold; 14 intake, 16 exhaust.
The engine is a 2.9 v-6. I'm not sure what I'm hearing, it may be spark knock.
timing is correct, just had new plugs and wires and distributor. I think it may be valves, I hear it when I accelerate hard.
Sounds like spark knock to me. If theres no vacuum leaks/engine isnt running hot/EGR is working normally & if theres no troble codes I'd trying giving it a glass of water. Check this link www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html click on engine pinging & see Bob m's solution for carbon build up. Very simple. BTW you have a MAP not MAF, so disregard that.
I've got the same truck with 221K, the thing just wont quit running. Is this the original engine? Looks like i'm easily going to make 300K on my factory 2.9.
