I'm new yes, I read all of the threads, now I need your help. I thought that the I have the same problem. I went and got 2 cans of PM3 cleaner (all they had), used the vaccum line, allowed 2/3 of the first can to fo though, then set for approx. 1 hour, started trcuk and ran about 2 miles, "check egine" light came on and the trucked died twice, never completely but stumbled hard. Came back repeat, changed plugs (drivers sidem really black and built up), other side just black. Check truck again, runs fine, no light, but still the pinging (more so now), Does it really have to be three times ?, that #3 plug was hard to change..
What gives ?? Any help.
Thanks in advance....
Well, all I know is the TSB says to do it three times. But pinging can also be caused by a dirty MAF sensor and loose lower intake bolts. Why not look at these next. Save those crusty old spark plugs in case you need to repeat the decarbon process. The three things mentioned here are the most common causes of engine knock on the 4.0.
I took the truck for a 40 mile spin, put in drive and got on the interstate, 75-80mph, well over 3000 rpm, more like 4200 rpms, drove like this for about 10 miles. It seemed to have helped a little, but their is still some pinging and it feels like the power level has decreased. What do ya'll think ?
Thanks
Assuming there are no obvious things such as a vaccum leak, I'd look into cleaning the MAF sensor and retorquing the lower intake manifold. These two items, plus what you have done, are the three most common reasons for knock in the 4.0L. There is one bolt on the lower intake that will be hard to get to; it's under the upper radiator hose. Don't fight it; drain a few quarts of coolant and remove the hose. Even at that, I still had to use a swivel; that in itself is a bummer because it can skew the actual torque applied to the bolt. If you can get your hands on a torque wrench with 1/4" drive, it may help. The bolts are torqued in four stages with the max torque being 15 - 18 ft - lb.
BTW, did you install new plugs after decarboning? Mine were trashed and the engine wouldn't idle worth a darn and the power loss was tremendous.............until new plugs were installed.

10-4, changed plugs to Motorcraft PP plugs, (double plat. plugs) after the second cleaning, what should be used to clean the MAF sensor ? Do you have to take it off first ? Thanks for the help.
John
Thanks
I will give it a try this weekend.
Has anyone seen a great/good improvement with dual exhaust over the standard setup, maybe gut out the cat and open it up some? Please advise.
