I'm new to this site and think it's great.
I was wondering what guys long term impressions are of the 5.4L.I've driven the 302 for 25 years and bought an F250 18 months ago.34,000 miles and so far I'm pretty happy.Had a bad coil last week. That's all so far. Thanks,Rick
I've got an 01 F250 4X4 auto CC LB 5.4L with 135,000 miles. I got it used with 130,000. Doesn't use oil, runs fine and so far no problems. I have put a few mods on it. A 4" lift, 35s, new rims, nerf bars, removed the cats & added duels / flowmasters, and going to pick it up from the shop in a few hours with the NEW 4.56 gears
I traded a '97 F-150 with the 5.4 recently for my F-250 also with the 5.4. In 130,000 miles I had to replace an IAC valve at about 80 and a o2 sensor at 110. I was happy enough to buy that motor again.
I had a 99 SD with the 5.4. I loved the truck, but that 5.4 pi$$ed me off everytime I drove it due to the fact that it was the most gutless truck I have ever owned. I had a 92 Toy with the 3.0 V6, 7" lift and 35's with stock gears that was not as gutless! My buddy's F-150 with the 4.6 has more nut! I traded that 99 SD for an 01 F-350 SD psd, no more gutless truck for me!!!
hmm, its definatly not a powerstroke as far as power (but the price tag is much nicer), and it pulls a little different down low then the old pushrod motors (302/351), but so far i definatly wouldnt say gutless. if your moving a lot of weight often, it may want some more gear, thats all. ... and definatly not comparable to a toyota as far as i am concerned, which is pretty much useless as a work truck.
Maybe I just had a bad one!!! reg cab long box, 5.4, unloaded, could not hold highway speed limit up slight grade, or on flat grade with a head wind! I only compared it to the Toyota in that sense, cause the Toyota would hold highway speed on those same grades in the same conditions! You are absolutely right, there is nothing "work truck" about a Toyota, that's why I now have a SD and I pi$$ my wife off cause I spend too much time on this website!!!
