Hey guys, i have an 1989 F-150 302 engine that i bought a few months back. The guy i bought it from told me before hand that the dual tanks havent been reading on the gas gauge. Is there a way that i can find what the problem is without dropping both tanks??
I have a '92 which I think is the same. Under the dash bezel at the fuel pump switch (to switch between tanks) you'll find all the wiring for the power to the two tanks as well as fuel level signal lines I believe. You can check back there for a signal and check your fuel level gauge while you are at it without dropping the two tanks.
I wouldn't think BOTH fuel level senders would go at the same time. More likely in my mind is that something common in the system has gone out. The gauge, or a common connector where both signals travel thru.
At least this will keep your thread current a little while if nothing else.

The problem is very common on those years trucks.
90% of the time it is the fuel sending units in the tanks. That would be the first place I look on a truck that is 15 years old.
I had to take my truck to a small shop and it was both tank senders that decided to head south for the winter! Works now ,although the front tank doesn't take the fuel from the gas hose, (kicking back like its full).

hambeemer Your filler tube is not installed correctly.
sharksfin28 had me on instant messanger a few days ago giving me a visual of the problem.
Apparently the front tank is not factory & the wiring was jerry rigged badly. I told him to check the wiring first since it appeared to be homemade. He also said he was going to take it to the shop & let them tell him whats going on with it.
I can see both senders going. I can see both senders going at *nearly* the same time. But.... the changes of them both going at the *same* time I find suspicious. Very suspicious. Not impossible, but improbable. I would have only hit that absolute last.
From reading the original post, the previous owner said the dual tanks weren't reading properly. Who said they went out at the same time? Glad it's fixed!
hey!
thanks for the note! in regard to the mis installed filler neck!
I am planning to take the truck for a 2500 mile trip this May! Sure need those tanks for that!
