Rough Idle at 1000 RPM
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Sep-02 AT 02:09 PM (EST)]Hey all,
Not sure if this is a problem or not, and I'm more curious than anything. If my truck is running, doesn't matter if it's warm or cold, and I leave it in neutral I can slowly press the accelerator and bring the truck to 1000ish RPMs and it will vibrate a good bit. You can actually feel it on the gear shift (6 Spd Man) and the truck vibrates as well. It's not a huge vibration, but it is noticable. Along with this, if I'm sitting at a stop and I take off like a bat out of hell, the truck vibrates like crazy in first gear, but is very smooth through the rest of the gears. Anybody have any ideas what these vibrations might be? Are they a concern or am I just being paranoid. The truck is a 2002 F-250, SC, 4x4, PSD, 6 Spd Man with 26000 miles.
Thanks,
basstardo

Just more of a thought I guess. I just have had weird things happen to me with a dirty fuel filter, ie. restrictions, fuel flow velocity changes, etc. Sometimes......many times engine performance can be related to fuel and air...the two basic elements to combustion.....just my thoughts.

Joe I'm not real sure to be honest. I was sitting in a parking lot about two weeks ago, and I was playin with the pedal and I found that it was doing it. It may have been doing it since I've owned it, but I never played with it before so I can't say for sure. Is it a bad thing?

It sounds to me like the balance is off a tad on the crankshaft. If it is not really annoying, I'd ignore it. It seems unlikely to me that Ford would agree to do anything about it anyway under warranty unless it is shaking your fillings out of your teeth. I don't think it will hurt anything. You'll never run your engine for any sustained period of time in that RPM range anyway.

Balancing a crankshaft is not really an exact science. You balance it so that you get the least amount of primary and secondary imbalance in the RPM range that the engine is going to spend most of its time in. If you eliminate the imbalance at 1000 RPM, it is likily to show up at some other RPM range. Since the engine is never going to run for any sustained amount of time at 1000 RPM anyway (and it is an expensive fix, requiring the removal of the crank shaft) the logical thing to do is ignore it. Or, you could buy a Harley Davidson so you'd have something to compare it (the vibration) to. (That is humor, for those who don't recognize it.)
