Has anyone else ever done this??

I saw the thread about brake torquing, and it got me thinking about this...

A couple friends of mine and I went out in an old POS 70's (not sure the exact year) F-250 w/ 289 V8 and 4-speed. We were just out riding around on gravel roads (we actually fishtailed once and ended up completely sideways in the road, and found out the hard way the road was as wide as the truck was long). Then my friend decides that this would be cool. We went to a paved 2 lane road that had a big hill on it. We drove up to the top, stopped, threw it in first, hit the clutch, and rolled backward most of the way down the hill. Near the bottom, he dumped the clutch and we took off. We nearly wound up in the ditch. Yes, it did damage the truck, but it was a lot of fun.

I was wondering if anyone else had done this or heard about it?

I'm an old guy, but I never did that sort of thing much, because I knew if I did I would be the one to have to fix what I tore up. But I had a friend who did what you described (at about 10 mph in reverse), only with an automatic! He never broke it either a far as I know! (built Ford tough) He called his tire marks "fish hooks".

No can't say that I've done that....but my mom actually put one of our trucks in reverse (I still dont understand how) when she was going down the highway at 55mph...I guess she forgot she was driving a 4 spd, and not her 5spd omni...

dang miracle that she didnt drop the tranny.

Next time you do that, turn off the engine first. Then put it in 2nd gear and let the clutch out (while you're rolling backwards). See if you can get the engine to start (similar to push-starting) but going in the opposite direction.

Then let me know how it goes because I have always wondered what would happen.

or backwards in reverse
