sorry i forgot to mention, i had pumped up the lifters prior to installation, filled the push rods with oil, primed the oil pump and pressurised the whole oil system by turning the oil pump with a drill, oiling from the start should not be a problem, 351w, with gtp-40 heads, comp cam, hydraulic lifters, etc, is it possible that i didn't get the right push rods? something screwy is up.
Are they stock roller rockers or aftermarkets? What Year motor. If aftermarkets, yes chances are you need longer pushrods. I just went through all that. The way all my instructions say to adjust is, right when the exhaust valve is opening adjust the intake valve on the same cylinder by tighten the nut while turning the pushrod until you feel a slight resistance, the go a 1/2 to full turn more to set lifter pre-load.Then do the same for the exhaust valves. That way the valve you are adjusting is sitting on the base circle of the cam. I had to get a pushrod length checker to get the proper pushrod length and proper valve train geometry. If not you will eat up your valve train. Let us know what's happening.
well lo and behold, just confirmed today that the speed shop gave me the wrong push rods, they gave me push rods for a 302 not a 351w.seeing that the rods differ by about 1 1/4 inches, i'm surprised that the engine ran at all. let alone very smoothly. i'm gonna have a little chat at the shop that supplied these. now i'm a little worried that the longer ones will be too long, i mean how much do the lifters bleed down? but will find out tomorrow, never know maybe all the specs they based the rest of the parts on are not quite right either. hope they have a real good atitude, i spent over 3 grand for all the parts. will let you know.
Lo And Behold, I Removed The Push Rods And They Are For A 351w Not A 302, The Paper Work Says For A 302 But In Fact They Are The Same Length As Some I Took From A 351w At The Wreckers To Compare. So I'm Now Back To Stage One, Do I Remove The Intake Manifold And Heads? Could The Valves Be Just Touching The Pistons? I Still Think That The Rods I Have A Just A Little Too Short , The Reason Being That Even On The 302 I Took Out When I Set The Piston On Any Cylinder To Tdc On The Compression Stroke, And Loosen Off The Rocker, The Push Rods Comes Up Just A Little Maybe 1/8" Then When I Tighten The Rocker Back Down, Using My Fingers I Get It Snug But With The Same Gap, 1/8" Between The Pedestal Of The Rocker And The Head Mounting Area, I Then Can Tighten Down The Rocker To Spec Within The 1/4 To 1 Turn That The Manufacturer Say I Should. Any Ideas? Thanks :-x16
I don't know for sure what your problem is, but why did you pump up your lifters before installing them. I've bought lifters before, that have come with a note saying NOT to pump them up first. Also, filling your pushrods with oil isn't necessary, since they get filled when you prime your oil pump. That being said, it sounds like you have bolt down, pedastel type rockers. No adjustment for them. Rotate your engine by hand, until both rockers on your #1 cylinder are all the way up on the pushrod end of the rocker. Grasp the pushrods on that cylinder with two fingers, and check it for up and down play. Also, spin them back and forth. If you have play, or if they spin very easily, that's where your noise is coming from. If your lifters and rockers are still good, then you need longer pushrods. Since pedastel type rockers are not adjustable, different pushrod lengths are available. As mentioned earlier, a pushrod length checker is necessary to determine the correct length needed, other then the expensive trial and error method.
the reason i pumped up the lifters first was that both the rebuild book and the lifters instruction sheet say too. but i believe i'm getting close to getting the problem solved, tried a set of longer rods to day, noise much better will try a slightly longer set tomorrow, not sure what a push rod checker is, but at least now i have some preload. will see tomorrow.
