Hello Im new here and need some advice,
I have a 1996 4x4 ranger with a 4.o automatic at 99,000 miles, changed plugs , wires air filter O2 sensor, throttle position sensor and used intake cleaner and still has a rough idle that seems like its going to die , it bucks and surges at times , what am i missing?
Thanks for any help you can offer
Most likely, the idle control solenoid is gummed up. Although, I did work on a 91 Exploder that would die at every stop, did everything I could think of to it, and it wouldn't stop doing that. Come to find out, at some point somebody had adjusted the throttle stop screw to try and keep it running. There is a spec for how far the throttle should be open, I think it's a .015" feeler gauge should fit between the bottom of the throttle plate and the throttle body. Check in a real shop manual first, though.
