Hello everyone. I have a problem and I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not. I have a 1979 F150 with a 351M. when the engine is cold it starts right up
and runs great. when the engine gets hot (about 20 minutes) it shuts down just
like I turned the key off. then it will not re-start untill it cools back down. It apears that the electrical system shuts down but I dont know. my manuals are
not much help and I really dont want to take it to the shop. any advise would be great
Thanks
Paul
Check the horseshoe looking part that goes on the coil.My truck did the same thing.I was trying everything and nothing worked.I wilgled this piece, and vavoom,it started right up.That part is a dealer or junkyard part only.It cost $9.00 but worth every penny because it worked.Just a thuoght.
Might as well check over the entire coil while you're at it. Maybe it's getting too hot and can't hold the current.
Whatever the case is, it sounds like it's a complete cut off of electricity, rather than something slowly losing power. You said your engine shuts right off like you turned the key off, rather than the engine missing or sputtering until it kills.
Might end up havin to go through the whole engine electrical. =(
Check the electrical module. (Brain Box) There is a circuit within it that is designed to switcht the electrical current over when it is no longer needed. If this wears out then the engine will just turn off.
