Mercury 312
The heads on my 292 had 5 burt valves. While I was searching for options a friend of mine sold me a 312 engine he had laying in his shop. I bought the engine, a late Holley pattern 4bbl manifold, a 2bbl manifold with carb, 2 near perfect heads, and an engine stand all for $300. This was less than it would have cost me to redo the heads on my 292. He got this engine out of a 59 Mercury car and used it in his 55 sedan while he was building the ultimate Y motor. He says the engine was just fine when he pulled it. The heads were removed and the bore has some minor surface rust. I plan on going completly through this engine, cleaning it up, and only replacing what needs replacing. In the meantime I'm going to use the 312 heads on my 292. The only markings on the heads besides what looks like a clock face and single numbers are 471 repeated several times. The color of the engine and heads is a dark almost navy blue. While installing these heads on my 292 the # 10 head bolt on the passenger side would not tourque due to damaged threads. Will it be OK to run this engine on a limited basis until the 312 is ready? Mainly I just want to be able to move the truck around without towing it. It is a 63 250. If I had it to do over again I would not have bothered with the 292 at all. I wanted to get it on the road without pulling the motor.
